Newport retain U-14 ‘C’ county title
New Inn just couldn’t match the skill or speed of the young girls from Newport who retained the U14 ‘C’ title and in doing so added a second trophy in less than a week on Monday of last week.
Seven of the Newport/Ballinahinch starting fifteen brought home their second medal as just six days earlier they won the under 12 title. Throughout the first half, little or nothing separated the sides and with Newport having more of the possession, they should have had a far bigger score at the break but their wasteful shooting saw them clock up a total of seven in that half.
It took six minutes before Newport opened the scoring when the hard working Shauna Curtin side stepped the New Inn full back Aoife O’Brien whom she failed to get through previously, and pointed.
New Inn were depending far too much on just a handful of excellent players such as their full back who was put under immense pressure from Newport/Ballinahinch and keeper Becky Queally made some fine saves and clearances. Their opponents on the other hand had far too much scoring power but that didn’t happen until positional changes took place from the start of the second half.
New Inn’s first score came after a long solo run in from Alanna Moore who continued to work tirelessly and while Newport went on to clock up a further three points, so too did they watch New Inn dig into that lead to leave just one mere point between the sides at the break. Newport 0-4, New Inn 0-3.
The outcome never looked in doubt with Newport looking sharper and faster but no one could have predicted the final scoreline.
New Inn did come close on occasions with Jean Woods, Aideen Bergin, Louise Barlow working very hard, but when Newport hit for their first goal seven minutes into the second half, through Shauna Curtin, the New Inn heads went down as they knew that this mountain would be far too much for them.
Newport/Ballinahinch continued to dominate with Annie Keane, Keeley Lenihan, Clodagh Sheldon, and Saoirse McGrath serving up great displays, it was the hard working Siobhan Gleeson, Alannah Mullanney and Shauna Curtin who walked time and again through the opposition back line to split them up and to bring this title back to Newport.
